I recommend, the book, Good Calories, Bad Calories: Fats, Carbs, and the Controversial Science of Diet and Health.  It just makes sense, but is not necessarily "popular science". 

We all know people who can eat whatever they want, and never gain weight.  We also know people don't eat very much, but can never lose weight.  We now know that genetics--not an absolutely determining factor,  hormones, combinations of foods, and other physiological factors determine what your body does with what you consume, whether it makes it into fat, muscle, or simply doesn't absorb it at all. 

Good science is what is provable, reproducible, and doesn't necessarily follow what whomever funded the study intended the results to be.  The results are the results.  Scientists sometimes persecute other scientists when what they come up with doesn't fit with what is "popular".  As a chiropractor, no one can accuse me of embracing the popular, nor do I embrace everything alternative either.  The best studies are not always popular, in fact, many times just the opposite.  Which is why there is such a disparity in the consensus of what is correct.  In the South Beach Diet (which I also recommend), Dr. Arthur Agatston, a cardiologist, found that the American Heart Association's endorsed diet was actually not getting the results he or they were trying to achieve.  He did his own empirically based studies and came up with the South Beach Diet.  It is controversial, because it went against popular thinking, but nonetheless effective. 

Dr. Atkins popularized the low-carb diet, and in his time, was extremely brave in his attempt to change popular opinion and paradigms about health (he was right about many things).  There is now much more information about the biochemistry, as well as research, that has helped us fine tune and understand how to maximize those processes. More information and research is reproducing similar results, making diets much more than just a "fad", but more of a way of life.  I've always believed lifestyle to be the key to health, when it is not work, but part of your every day activities. 

I highly recommend this information, for those of us who are interested in a healthy lifestyle.  This groundbreaking work provides more keys in the puzzle to maintaining a healthy weight.  Good Calories, Bad Calories: Fats, Carbs, and the Controversial Science of Diet and Health, by Gary Taubes, discusses current thinking about what we understand is healthy, what isn't, and why.
